Theodora is Handel's second to last oratorio. It is his only oratorio other than Messiah to be based on a Christian subject, and he wrote the entire work in just one month.
Theodora is intimate and deals with religious devotion and human nobility on a very personal level. Alongside beautiful arias, many of the choruses have an unexpected contemplative quality. In fact, the entire work concludes with a chorus that, rather than being a brilliant crowd-pleaser, is more of a gentle lullaby.

Lully’s comédie-ballet was first performed in 1675 at the Academie Royale de Musique, created from favorite scenes from his earlier comedies. The libretto lampoons doctors, teachers, and lawyers, and includes the famous Marche pour la cérémonie des Turcs from Molière’s Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. Arias in French, Italian, and Spanish, and delightful dance music.

ALEXANDER'S FEAST
ORATORIO SOCIETY OF NEW YORK
MAY 11, 2026 | 8:00 PM
The OSNY closes their season with a rare performance of George Frideric Handel’s Alexander’s Feast, composed in 1736. An ode to the power of music, OSNY last performed the work in 1878, and it has only been presented in its entirety at Carnegie Hall once before—in 1959! Based on a poem by John Dryden, the work celebrates the feast held by Alexander the Great in honor of his conquest of Persia, where the court musician Timotheus uses music to stir the conqueror’s emotions—moving him from joy to sorrow, to love, and finally to vengeance. The grand choral writing offers moments of both intimacy and majesty, culminating in a final chorus that exalts Saint Cecilia, patron saint of music.
